Indigenous Education

Indigenous Education seeks to improve success and supports for Indigenous students, and increase the presence of Indigenous culture, languages and history for all students. It also aims to help teachers bring Indigenous knowledge into their teaching practice.

At, GFSS we value Indigenous education as a key part of our mission. We are pleased to have access to space, resources, staff, and activities to enhance the education of Indigenous students.

Elder-in-Residence

At GFSS, we are grateful to welcome Indigenous Elder, Joanie Holmes. Joanie is recognized in the community as having gained a depth of knowledge and wisdom of cultural teachings, Indigenous history, spirituality, traditional language, ceremonies and/or healing practices through training and lived experiences. As an Elder, Joanie is greatly respected and has a range of roles including mentorship, guidance, decision-making, and teaching.

Indigenous Education Teachers

Indigenous Education Teachers at GFSS seek to improve success and supports for Indigenous students, increase the presence of Indigenous culture, language, and history for all students, and to help all educators bring Indigenous knowledge and principles of learning into their pedagogy.

Indigenous Student Education Assistant

The Indigenous Student Education Assistant’s primary responsibility is to support Indigenous learners. They assist Indigenous students, and at times, their parents and relevant staff in all areas of education so as to enhance the success of Indigenous students.
