Take Our Kids to Work, Grade 9s
Take Our Kids to Work is an annual National program in which grade 9 students are hosted by parents, friends, relatives or volunteers at workplaces across the country every November. This supports career development by helping students connect school, the world of work, and their own futures
Work Experience
Work experience is an educational program which will help students prepare for the transition from secondary school to the world of work or trades/apprenticeship programs. Through work experience, students can observe, and practice employability skills required in the workplace as well as technical and applied skills relating to specific occupations or industries.
In Work Experience, students are required to complete 100 hours of volunteer work experience for 4 graduation credits. All students interested in participating in these elective work experience courses must apply and go through an interview process with the employer.
Pathways
This program allows students to receive Trades related certifications (WHMIS, Food Safe, First Aid etc.) at a subsidized cost. Although students are enrolled through School District 51. Certificate programs are facilitated through Selkirk College in Grand Forks. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the sites as these courses are offered outside of the school day (usually on weekends). The specific certificates and the dates they are offered will be announced at the beginning of each Semester.
Fire Suppression
The Wildland Fire Suppression program is provided in cooperation with the Ministry of Forests Wildland Management Branch and provides training to the Junior Initial Attack level. Students who are successful in completing a variety of training components in the program will be awarded multiple certifications that apply to fire suppression related employment. The course may also satisfy job requirements for many other private and public sector employment opportunities. This course is offered outside of the timetable and is taught by Fire Chief Rich Piche. An informational and sign-up meeting is held every September.
Early Childhood Care and Education
This is a 3-course program (12 credits) offered through Selkirk College that can be done online. It is a dual credit program which means students receive 12 high school credits AND 12 post-secondary credits. Successful participants of the program will be immediately qualified to apply to the BC ECE Registry to work as ECE Assistants. There is more coursework to be done to get fully certified as an ECE. Tuition will be paid for by the School District. Interested students need to apply in the Spring for the following September.
Emergency Medical Responder Course
This course is an entry-level medical course that trains students to respond to life-threatening medical conditions and traumatic emergencies. This course provides an opportunity for students to develop skills in first aid-related professions, it provides them with a certificate, as well as the opportunity to write their certification exams, and provides an opportunity to find employment in a variety of fields which require medical training. Employment opportunities for licensed Emergency Medical Responders may include Ambulance services, Fire and Rescue services, Occupational or Industrial first aid settings and more. Interested students sign up for this course during course selection days.
